Benefit comparison

ChatGPT vs Microsoft Copilot vs Google Gemini for nonprofits

Nonprofit AI selection should separate model capability from validated nonprofit pricing, account controls, data policy, and rollout ownership. This comparison uses official OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google sources to help charities decide which route to evaluate first without assuming every AI product has the same nonprofit discount.

Decision pointOpenAI for NonprofitsMicrosoft 365 nonprofit discountGoogle Workspace for NonprofitsMicrosoft for NonprofitsGoogle for Nonprofits
Best starting pointChatGPT fits teams that want a standalone AI workspace for drafting, research, analysis, custom GPTs, and cross-tool knowledge work.Microsoft Copilot fits charities already using Microsoft 365, Teams, Office files, identity, security, and partner support.Google Gemini fits charities already standardised on Google Workspace, Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, and lightweight collaboration.Check provider page for current details.Check provider page for current details.
Nonprofit pricing routeOpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT Business is available to nonprofits at discounted monthly or annual per-user pricing, while larger nonprofits can contact sales for ChatGPT Enterprise discounts.Microsoft's nonprofit page says Copilot Chat is included in Microsoft 365 plans and the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on is available at a nonprofit discount for eligible nonprofits.Google has a nonprofit Workspace route; do not claim a separate Gemini nonprofit discount unless the current Google source explicitly says so.Check provider page for current details.Check provider page for current details.
Data and security fitBusiness and Enterprise data controls are useful, but ChatGPT Business does not include BAAs and API discounts are not currently part of OpenAI for Nonprofits.Copilot is strongest when Microsoft tenant governance, files, Teams, identity, device controls, and admin ownership are already mature.Gemini is strongest when Google Workspace sharing, Drive governance, Gmail/Docs workflows, and Workspace admin controls are already the operational backbone.Check provider page for current details.Check provider page for current details.
Good first use casesGrant proposal review, policy drafting, public-document summarisation, source-checking workflows, data analysis, and reusable internal GPTs.Meeting summaries, document drafting, Teams/Office productivity, internal knowledge work, and agent-supported workflows inside Microsoft 365.Email and document drafting, Drive search and summarisation, meeting support, lightweight research, and Workspace-native collaboration.Check provider page for current details.Check provider page for current details.
When to waitWait if the charity has no AI policy, no data-entry rules, or needs a BAA but is only evaluating ChatGPT Business.Wait if Microsoft permissions, file hygiene, identity, or admin ownership are weak; Copilot can amplify messy access patterns.Wait if Google shared drives, external sharing, account ownership, or document retention rules are unclear.Check provider page for current details.Check provider page for current details.

Practical recommendation

Choose ChatGPT first for a dedicated AI workspace and cross-tool drafting or analysis. Choose Microsoft Copilot first when the charity's operational knowledge already lives in Microsoft 365 and governance is mature. Choose Google Gemini first when Workspace is the primary staff environment. In all cases, write the AI policy, data rules, review workflow, and renewal owner before broad rollout.
