AI guide
AI tools and ChatGPT for nonprofits
Charities should separate AI capability from nonprofit pricing. OpenAI now has an official nonprofit route for ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise, but API discounts, BAAs, eligibility validation, data controls, and human review still need separate checks.
Good first use cases
- Drafting grant outlines from approved facts
- Summarising public documents and meeting notes
- Turning policy into staff checklists
- Creating first-pass service directory content for human review
Do not start with
- Beneficiary case decisions
- Unreviewed legal, medical, safeguarding, or financial advice
- Uploading sensitive personal data into unapproved tools
- Public claims that cannot be traced to source documents
Governance checklist
- Write approved and prohibited AI use cases
- Choose ChatGPT, Copilot, API, or embedded vendor AI deliberately
- Define data handling rules before pilots
- Review outputs against source documents before publication
Decision notes
- The OpenAI for Nonprofits benefit page links to the official Help Center article and preserves the ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, API-discount, and BAA caveats.
- Microsoft's nonprofit programme currently gives charities explicit official routes for Microsoft cloud, Copilot, Dynamics 365, Copilot Studio, and Power Platform eligibility checks.
- AI pages can earn traffic only if they stay current and separate official pricing from governance, privacy, and implementation limits.
