Scientific research, nonprofit institutes, and academic labs
Claude Team for nonprofit research: free seats and eligibility
Verified research groups can apply for free Standard seats or Premium seats at USD 15 per user per month for 12 months, for groups of 1-25 users. Places are limited.
Who it is best for
An eligible lab or nonprofit research institute with a named lead, institutional approval and a defined research workflow. Review existing institutional agreements first, and test with public papers, non-sensitive code or approved research material rather than identifiable participant records.
Eligibility notes
Principal investigators or equivalent at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering and related fields may apply. This is not a universal charity offer. For-profit companies, contract research organisations and industry R&D are excluded; final eligibility and pricing are confirmed at signup.
Source-checked notes
- Provider guidance dates the new pricing for existing discounted groups to billing charges after 27 August 2026. Earlier prepaid charges are not refunded or prorated.
- Groups inactive for 90 days may return to standard Team pricing with notice. Record a renewal review before the first year's term ends.
- Additional research capacity or API credits require a separate application-based grant; seat approval does not award those credits.
- Keep source citations, research checks and reproducibility steps outside the chat workspace. A subsidised licence does not replace scholarly review or institutional approval.

Common questions
FAQ
Does every registered charity qualify?
No. The applicant must satisfy the scientific research-group criteria. A general fundraising, advice or community charity should check Claude for Nonprofits instead.
FAQ
Is the free plan permanent?
No. Review the provider's renewal notice and then-current price before the introductory term ends. Keep an export and cancellation plan so a lab is not dependent on an unaffordable renewal.
FAQ
Can a UK nonprofit research institute apply?
The programme is presented for research institutions around the world. An eligible UK institute can submit its affiliation, but the provider must verify the lead and group; a place is not guaranteed.
FAQ
What should the research lead check before inviting the lab?
Confirm procurement approval, allowed data, source-checking expectations, billing ownership and who removes departing researchers. Keep reproducible results and research records in institutional systems.
